The Indian Business School Admissions Landscape
Postgraduate management education in India represents one of the most competitive career avenues for engineers, commerce graduates, and liberal arts students. Over 330,000 aspirants register annually for the Common Admission Test (CAT), conducted on a rotational basis by one of the older Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) on the last Sunday of November. CAT scores are accepted by 21 IIMs and premier non-IIM institutions including FMS Delhi, SPJIMR Mumbai, IIT Delhi/Bombay (DoMS/SJMSOM), and MDI Gurgaon.
Complementing the IIM entrance, XLRI Jamshedpur administers the Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) on the first Sunday of January, known for its unique Decision Making (DM) section and absence of rigid sectional time limits. Other notable examinations include SNAP (for Symbiosis institutes like SIBM Pune and SCMHRD) and NMAT (for NMIMS Mumbai), each testing distinctive speed, adaptive scoring, and analytical agility models.
Strategic Sectional Pillars for 99+ Percentile Performance
VARC Consistency
Reading Comprehension accounts for 16 out of 24 questions in CAT. Focus on passage elimination rather than hunting for positive matches. Read diverse long-form essays from Aeon, The Atlantic, and philosophical journals daily.
DILR Set Selection
DILR percentile is determined entirely by set selection. Spend the first 4 minutes evaluating all 4 sets to pick the 2 most deterministic arrangements. Solving 2 complete sets cleanly secures a 95+ percentile.
QA Round-Based Triage
Arithmetic and Algebra account for over 70% of Quantitative Aptitude. Execute the 3-round approach: solve instant arithmetic in Round 1, tackle manageable algebra in Round 2, and skip heavy time-consuming questions.
