The National Law University System & Legal Education in India

Legal education in India has undergone an institutional transformation since the establishment of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bangalore. Admission to 24 National Law Universities across the country is coordinated through the Consortium of NLUs via the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), conducted annually in early December for 5-year integrated BA LLB, BBA LLB, and one-year LLM programs. Separately, National Law University Delhi conducts its own autonomous admission test: the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET).

Unlike traditional memory-based examinations, contemporary law entrance tests are entirely passage-based. Candidates must digest dense 450-word editorial excerpts and apply legal principles, logical inferences, and critical deductions within 120 minutes, necessitating high-speed reading comprehension and cognitive agility.

Mastery Techniques for Passage-Based Legal Reasoning

Strict Principle Application

Never import outside legal theories into your answer. The principle provided in the passage must be treated as absolute law, even if it contradicts real-world statutes. Apply the rule mechanically to the facts to avoid subjective trap options.

Speed Reading & Triage

With 120 questions across approximately 25 long passages, candidates have less than 60 seconds per question. Develop a reading pace of 300+ words per minute and immediately skip multi-variable quant caselets during your first passage sweep.
